HEPA media of this kind is sealed and meant to be replaced rather than washed. The fine fibers that trap dust hold onto it permanently, so tapping the filter out or vacuuming its face only removes what is sitting loose on the surface, and the loading that actually costs you airflow stays where it is. Anything that soaks the media is worse still, since a HEPA element that has been wetted rarely dries back to the airflow it started with.
Change intervals depend far more on what the machine picks up than on the calendar. A household with pets, or one where the vacuum sees renovation dust, loads a filter in a fraction of the time a lightly used machine takes. Rather than counting months, hold the filter up to a light every so often and compare it against how a fresh one looks.
