On a Hoover Celebrity canister, the machine-end coupling is the fitting that plugs the hose into the body of the vacuum. Part 32855003 replaces it when the original splits, loses its grip, or will not stay locked into the inlet.
The machine end takes more abuse than any other part of the hose. It gets twisted every time the hose is stowed and yanked whenever the canister catches on furniture. A cracked coupling leaks air right at the source, so the machine sounds like it is working hard while almost nothing happens down at the floor tool.
