Its purpose is straightforward: keep the adapter aligned so the disposable bag's collar meets the machine cleanly and holds that position through a full shift of repeated bag changes.
A failing bracket rarely announces itself the way a torn bag does. A cracked shell or a snapped mounting ear lets the adapter drift out of true by a few degrees, and once that happens the bag stops seating evenly against its collar. What an operator actually notices is dust leaking around the mouth of the bag and a bag that keeps working itself loose mid-shift, not anything that looks obviously broken at a glance, which is why the paper bag gets blamed while the bracket underneath is the real cause.
