Age shows up in two ways here. Either the spring loses tension so the bracket no longer returns cleanly, or the switch stops making a reliable contact and begins to work only sometimes. Both leave the head behaving unpredictably: cutting in and out as the machine is worked, refusing to respond until the nozzle is nudged, or staying on when it should have stopped. Because the two work as a pair, taking the assembly in one piece avoids chasing the same fault twice.

Fitting it is a matter of transferring the mounting position rather than adjusting anything. The assembly arrives set up, so the work is putting it back where the old one sat and confirming the bracket moves through its full travel before the head is closed. Check the wiring to the switch for chafe or discolouration while it is exposed.

Unplug the machine and photograph the bracket position before you take anything apart, so the new unit goes back at the same angle.
