Original Kirby belt lifter for the numbered machines, part 144356S, covering the 505, 508, 509, 511, 512, 513, 514, 516, 517 and 560 as well as the Sanitronic VII.
The lifter is what lets you take the belt off the brush roll without tools, so the roller stops turning for bare floors and the belt is not left under tension in storage. On machines of this age the lifter is usually stiff, cracked at the pivot, or missing altogether, and owners work around it by leaving the belt engaged permanently, which is how belts end up stretched and glazed.
Refitting a sound lifter brings that control back. Note the model range before ordering: these are the pre-Classic numbered Kirbys, not the Classic, Heritage or Generation machines, which take their own lifters.
