Debris travels up through the rigid tube on its way toward the bag, and the molded piece at the far end is what makes the final connection airtight against the bag fitting. Being flexible by design, that molded piece is also the part most prone to hardening and cracking as it ages under heat and constant use, almost always somewhere buried inside the machine where nobody would spot it during a routine look-over.
