The filter cover from the Bissell 3522 upright, part 2031088. It is the door that closes over the filter compartment and holds the filter against its seat, and it is listed for the 1739, 3530, 3537, 3574, 3575, 46E5, the 71Y7 series, 73G8 and the BGU1451T.
A filter only works if all the air is made to go through it. When the cover cracks at a hinge or a catch it sits proud, and air takes the easier route around the edge of the filter instead of through it. The machine feels fine, because nothing is restricting the flow, but dust goes past the filter and into the motor. That is the expensive way to find out.
If your cover no longer clicks home, or the filter can be lifted while it is closed, replace it.
