On the Oreck LW1500RS the fan housing doubles as the neck: it carries the motor and fan on one side and forms the swivel joint to the handle on the other. Part 09-83223-01 replaces the whole assembly.
Because it is both a structural and an airflow component, a crack here causes two problems at once. Air leaks into the path between fan and nozzle, so suction at the floor drops with no blockage to find, and the swivel develops play, so the handle wobbles and steering goes vague. Both usually appear together, and both get worse quickly once the plastic has started to split.
It fits the LW1500RS, the UK30500 and the UK31600 uprights. Unplug the machine before opening the housing, and check the fan and its fixings while the assembly is apart.
