The roller does the mechanical half of the cleaning. As the head passes over the floor its bristles work at the surface and break soil loose so the machine can take it away. A hard 0.25 mm bristle sits firmer than a softer grade, which is why it is the one to choose when a gentler roller is not cutting through grime on textured or heavily walked floors. It trades some delicacy for more aggressive agitation.
Bristles splay and lose stiffness with runtime, and once that happens a roller stops working the floor evenly no matter how well the rest of the machine is running.
