Product details
The F78 pre-motor filter, part 440004273, sits ahead of the motor inlet on the Dirt Devil UD70250. It is the last barrier between the dirt cup and the motor housing, catching whatever the cyclone stage did not spin out.
Because this filter protects the motor directly rather than the exhaust, a clogged one restricts airflow at the intake side. The motor works harder to pull air through it, which shows up as heat, a labored sound under load, and a gradual loss of suction that a quick tap-out will not fully fix once the pleats have packed down. Continuing to run the machine on a badly restricted pre-motor filter puts real strain on the motor bearings over time, since they are now working against resistance the design never intended.
This filter is usually foam or a dense fabric rather than pleated HEPA paper, built to be pulled, tapped clean and reinstalled a few times before it needs replacing outright. A filter that has thinned, torn, or stopped springing back to shape after cleaning has reached the end of its useful life even if it still technically fits.
- Part: 440004273, labeled F78
- Fits: Dirt Devil UD70250
- Position: pre-motor stage, ahead of the motor housing
- Change when: the motor runs hot or louder than usual, or the pleats are packed with dust
Checking and replacing this filter alongside the primary dirt cup filter keeps both ends of the airflow path clear, since a clean primary filter cannot make up for a clogged pre-motor stage.
