The wide, low mouth is deliberate. Spread across that opening, the airflow works along a whole band of cloth at once instead of pinching it into a single point, and that is what keeps loose weave, cushion piping and mattress ticking from being pulled out of shape as the tool passes. Overlapping strokes in one direction lift more than short scrubbing ones, and hair caught along the lip is worth pulling off between passes so the nozzle keeps sliding freely rather than skipping.

The lip is also the part that decides when to replace it. It takes every knock, and once it is chipped or has lost its flatness the seal against the fabric goes with it: air slips round the sides, the pull falls away, and the tool begins riding over dust it used to lift.
