Royal's all-metal uprights set nozzle height with a spring-loaded rod, and part 1003009000 is that rod. It holds the chosen height against the weight of the machine, so when it bends, loses its spring, or snaps, the nozzle either drops to its lowest setting or wanders between settings while you clean.
What you notice first is the machine becoming hard to push on carpet, or the brush roll suddenly howling against bare floor because the head has sunk. Plenty of people chase belts and brush rolls for weeks before anyone looks at the rod, which is a small, inexpensive piece for the amount of trouble it causes.
It fits the Royal Metal Everlast uprights RY8200, RY8300, RY8400 and UR38300, and the Royal metal uprights CR5128, CR5130 and CR5158.
