A HEPA cartridge is sealed media, so it cannot be rinsed back to working condition the way a foam piece can. Once it has loaded up, the only fix is a fresh cartridge, and running the machine well past that point pushes fine dust back into the room instead of holding it, which defeats the reason for having HEPA filtration in the first place.
