On the Panasonic MC-V9635 power nozzle, the rear cover closes the back of the head behind the brush roll. Part AC69QGJZV04 replaces it, and it does more than tidy the housing: it is part of the sealed chamber that keeps suction concentrated at the floor.

Break that seal and the head draws air through the opening at the back, which is the easy path, rather than through the carpet. The result is a nozzle that sounds fine and picks up poorly, plus an open housing that lets grit reach the brush roll ends and the belt.

It goes back in its original position. While it is off, pull the hair collars from the brush roll ends and check the belt — whatever broke the cover was probably working on those at the same time.
