It houses the on/off switch and routes the power lead out of the box, keeping the cord leaving the housing in a controlled line instead of kinking against the edge of the shell.

On a backpack machine the switch box rides at hip level, right where the housing meets doorframes, cart handles, and the occasional drop onto hard flooring. The box takes those knocks so the switch inside does not have to, and a shell that has cracked once tends to keep spreading from the same point every time the machine gets set down.
