This replacement Shark pre-motor foam filter (Part #F680, replacing #XFFT580) fits the Shark NV581, 581Q, and 586. It sits ahead of the motor, catching fine dust before it reaches the motor and wears it down.

Foam pre-filters compress and tear as they age, and a flattened one lets debris slip past while airflow falls. When the foam stops springing back after a rinse, suction fades and the motor loses its front-line protection. A fresh pair restores both.
