It sits ahead of the motor, trapping fine dust before it reaches the internals.

Pre-filters compress and clog over time, and a worn one lets grit through while airflow drops. When the filter no longer springs back after a rinse, the machine loses suction and the motor loses its guard. A fresh pair restores both.
