This is the new-style power switch and wiring harness for Carpet Pro SCBP1 backpack vacuums, part X1283, and the same assembly covers the SCBP1.2 and the Powr-Flite PF712DC. The switch comes attached to its harness, which is the way it is meant to be replaced - the fault is as often in the wiring as in the switch body.

A dying switch on a backpack is easy to recognise. The machine cuts out when the harness shifts on your back, or it only starts after the toggle has been worked back and forth, or it keeps running for a moment after you have shut it off. All three come from contacts that have arced and pitted over thousands of cycles.

Unplug the machine before opening the housing, and photograph the connections before anything comes apart.
