Product details
Part 83071-01 is the on/off switch inside the Oreck LW100 Magnesium upright, the piece that physically opens and closes the circuit feeding the motor. It sits behind the button and spring the operator's thumb presses; those front parts only push against this switch, while the work of actually connecting or interrupting power happens here.
Mechanical wear and electrical wear compound each other over the life of a machine. Internal contacts pit and scorch across thousands of press cycles, and once that surface stops making clean contact the symptoms are recognizable: a machine that starts only some of the time, one that cuts power the instant the handle gets bumped mid-clean, or one that produces no response whatsoever from a wall outlet already confirmed live. If the front button still snaps back crisply under a thumb but the machine itself behaves unpredictably, this switch is the more likely culprit over the button.
Disconnect the machine from power before opening the housing, and take a picture of the wiring layout before disturbing anything, since the terminals are not always marked and a lead landing on the wrong post leaves a new switch no better than the old one. Confirm the replacement works with the housing still open before closing the case back up, so a bad connection is easy to catch while the machine is still apart.
