It carries the brush roll and forms the finished top of the nozzle.
Cracks or broken mounting points in this housing let the brush roll drift out of alignment and open air leaks that sap carpet performance. A worn shell also rattles and can chip further with use. A fresh housing holds the roll square and seals the airflow again.
