Motors are not bolted rigidly into a C-series body. They float on flexible mountings at each end, and 6173 is the one at the front. It holds the motor's nose in position and soaks up vibration that would otherwise pass straight into the shell. The same number covers the C1.1, the C2.1 and the C3.1.
Heat and age turn the material hard and brittle. Once the front mounting loses its give, the motor drums against the housing, the machine sounds coarser than it used to, and that shaking works its way into neighbouring components — screws back off, seals get worried loose, and wiring routed nearby is worked back and forth every time the machine runs. A new mounting quiets things down and puts the motor back on its intended centreline.
Suspension at the motor comes from three numbers working together, and replacing one while leaving the others perished only shifts the load around. The tail of the motor is carried by 6189, the rear mounting, and the rubber mounting pair 6188ER cushions it in between.
