A soft roller trades scrubbing force for gentleness, which is the point on surfaces where a stiffer bristle could scuff or dull the finish and where protecting that finish matters as much as lifting the soil. It still agitates enough to work light soil loose for the machine to pick up, just without the mechanical bite a harder grade brings.
Soft bristles splay with use exactly as firm ones do, and a worn white roller leaves a duller floor and thinner pickup than a fresh one. Because the bristle was gentle to begin with, that decline is easy to write off as the floor simply being dirtier than usual, so it is worth pulling the roller out and looking at the bristle tips rather than judging by results alone.
