When the spring weakens or the boot splits, the handle stops locking cleanly. It feels loose or floppy through the recline motion, and it may not catch and hold upright at all, which on a machine this heavy means the handle can drop on its own the moment you let go.
The boot usually shows the first visible sign of trouble, since it is rubber exposed to the same flexing the spring goes through internally.
