The dome lid on a Hoover C2401 or C2401010 backpack does more than close the compartment, and this replacement, part 2KE2100000, also fits the Royal RY4000 and RY4001. It is the top-of-machine closure for the collection compartment, and on a backpack vacuum that lid is opened and re-seated at every bag change, more cycles than most lids on floor machines ever see.
The lid closes off the collection compartment and completes the sealed path the motor pulls air through. A lid that no longer seats fully, whether from a hairline crack or a worn sealing surface, opens a leak right at the top of the machine, and that leak shows up as weaker suction at the hose even when the filter and bag are both in good condition. On a backpack unit, a poorly seated lid can also let collected debris work its way out during use, which a canister sitting upright on the floor is less prone to since gravity and the seal both work in its favor there.
If suction has fallen off and the filters test clean, inspect the lid before assuming the motor is at fault. A lid that no longer snaps down firmly, or one with a visible crack along the seam, is the more likely cause, and it is often quicker to check than pulling the motor housing apart.
