F994 is the post-motor HEPA filter for the Dyson DC17, fitting the Animal, Absolute and All Floors versions of that upright.

The DC17 was sold in large part on what it kept out of the air, and this filter is where that promise lives. Once the pleats fill, air struggles through them: the machine loses suction at the floor and the motor labors against the restriction, and past a certain point the filter starts letting the finest material back out into the room.

Take the spent filter out of its housing and set the new one in the same orientation. There is nothing to unscrew. Six to twelve months is a reasonable interval, and if you cannot remember the last change the filter will tell you: gray right through the pleats means overdue.
