It rings the nozzle to cushion contact with furniture, walls, and baseboards.
A bumper that has cracked, hardened, or gone missing no longer absorbs impact, so the nozzle scuffs trim and furniture and takes chips itself along its edges. A fresh bumper brings back the soft buffer, letting the nozzle glide along walls without leaving marks.
