This original-style handle socket assembly fits Sanitaire 684, 886, and 888 uprights, and the 2118B, and ships without a spring. It forms the pivot joint at the base of the handle, letting the handle recline and lock while it carries the load of steering the machine.
A cracked or worn socket lets the handle wobble, sink, or fail to hold its reclined position, which makes the vacuum awkward to push and stresses the surrounding housing. A fresh socket restores a firm, properly hinged handle joint.
