Very little moisture reaches the fibres or the backing, and that is the practical advantage: the room comes back into use quickly instead of being closed off while a wet carpet dries, and there is none of the wicking that brings old marks back to the surface a day later.

Five sealed bags also keeps the compound in condition. A bag that has sat open in a damp basement picks up moisture, and compound that has clumped will not spread evenly or brush in properly.
