Small hand and stick vacuums run a fast motor through a small filter area, so a loaded element shows up quickly. Pickup fades within a few uses of heavy debris, the motor pitch rises to a whine, and dust that should stay trapped starts drifting back out with the exhaust. HEPA media that has turned from white to gray has usually stopped filtering properly even while the machine still seems to run, because the pleats are packed rather than passing air evenly through the whole surface.
