This dirt cup assembly, part 440001222, is a replacement collection bin for the Dirt Devil BD20050. It is the bagless cup that holds the dust and debris pulled in during use until it is emptied.
The cup depends on a tight seal against the housing to hold suction. A hairline crack from being knocked against a trash can, or a latch that no longer draws the cup in fully, lets air leak in at the seam instead of at the nozzle, and fine dust can escape back into the room when the cup is removed for emptying.
Because the cup is handled every time the vacuum is used, it wears faster than most other parts on the machine.
