Sanitaire's SC6060A and SC6065A canisters take a pleated cartridge filter, and this is the replacement, part 16280CP. It sits in the airflow path between the bag chamber and the motor, catching the fine dust that gets through so the motor never has to breathe it.
A cartridge does not tear or fall apart, it silently loads up. As the pleats fill, airflow through the machine drops, the motor note rises, and suction fades even though the bag looks half empty. Run it long enough and the motor works hotter and harder than it was built to, and a stale dusty smell starts coming out of the exhaust.
Fit the new cartridge the right way round and check it seats fully in its housing. A cartridge that is not sitting square lets unfiltered air slip past the edge.
