Part 98-3414-07 is an 11.5 inch brush roll for the Shark Rotator Liftaway upright, covering the NV500 and NV501 models. The roll spins against the carpet, and its rows of bristles agitate the pile to lift embedded dirt and hair up where the machine's airflow can carry it away.
Suction alone does not pull much out of carpet fiber, which is why the brush roll carries most of the deep-cleaning work on this style of upright. Once the bristles flatten or fray, or hair and thread bind tightly enough around the core to slow the roll's spin, that agitation drops off well before the vacuum sounds any different.
A slowed or bound roll also puts extra load on the belt driving it, so a wrap of hair that goes unnoticed for a while can turn a simple cleaning job into a belt replacement as well. Checking both ends of the roller for wound debris takes only a minute and heads that off.
